Living With A Chronic Illness Can Make Life Feel Like It’s Not Worth Living

You’re experiencing another flare-up. You’ve been working so hard to take care of your body, doing all the things you’ve been told to do— taking medications and supplements, exercising, meditation. But here it is again.

So many doctors visits. So many specialists. You’ve spent so much time and money trying to find answers and feel better. You’re exhausted. You just want some relief.

You want to thrive, not just survive. Living with chronic illness or pain has taken your life away. You work so hard to feel better. And you feel so alone.

For some, chronic illness or chronic pain is a trauma. Living with a chronic health condition can be traumatic, whether it’s pain, autoimmune disorders, fatigue, a major injury, or something you haven’t yet found a name for. Maybe you were recently diagnosed or maybe this is something you’ve lived with most of your life. Either way, every day you are fighting to get through and continue to live.

You don’t want to just endure. You want to thrive. You want to experience health, wholeness, and joy even when you have symptoms.

You ask, “why does this continue to happen? Why can’t I just feel better?” You’re so tired of battling this. You want to live again.

Chronic Illness Is A Form Of Loss

These symptoms have stolen your life from you. You’re watching your life pass you by. So many lost days. So much lost time. You have lost your health and the life you once had.

You Work So Hard To Feel Better

You continue to see healers and doctors and specialists. You go through more tests and labs, hoping that maybe you’ll get answers this time. Yet you’re so tired of all these appointments and blood draws. When will you find the answers you need to figure this out and feel better? You see your friends and family enjoying their lives with so much ease. It’s simply not fair. You so badly want to be able to enjoy your life like everyone else.

You Feel So Alone

You feel like no one understands how bad it gets and how much you feel like you’ve lost your life. You feel ashamed of your symptoms, that you did something to deserve it. No one seems to understand.

I Will Strive to Support Your Innate Health

I understand that chronic illness can be a trauma in and of itself. In our work together, you will not be told that your symptoms are “all in your head.” Your symptoms are real. I believe you. Therapy can provide a space to grieve what’s been lost. To provide you with the psychological and emotional strength to better cope with physical illness or pain.

I spent many years as a therapist in an integrative health clinic supporting adults and teens living with chronic illness. Our work together will be about supporting you in finding health even during times of illness. If you feel that your health conditions have a connection to past trauma, we can address this in our work together. Trauma often expresses itself through the body. It’s possible that the symptoms you live with today hold a story from the past.

How Can Therapy For Chronic Illness Help You?

Therapy to address chronic illness be used to bring forth and support your innate healthfulness. Health is accessible to you even during times of illness or flare-ups. The safety of a therapeutic relationship where you can bring all of your pain can help you feel seen, heard, and understood. While we can’t cure the illness or take the pain away, we can certainly help you feel less alone and develop greater compassion for yourself and your suffering.

During sessions, we will work together to gain insight into your thoughts, emotions, and experiences as someone living with a chronic illness. We can help you create a new narrative for your life that isn’t defined by sickness. We can also practice various mindfulness skills and self-compassion exercises for chronic illness. These allow you to become more aware of the present moment and less focused on symptoms, have greater ability to tolerate distress, and cultivate an incredibly loving attitude towards yourself.

Counseling for chronic illness and pain can reduce the suffering you’ve gotten too used to living with. A new way out is possible.

Don’t Give Up. Don’t Ever Give Up.

Falling into despair and isolation because of chronic illness or chronic pain is not the kind of life anyone should get used to living. Seeking out chronic illness therapy can help restore your innate health and wholeness even during times of illness.
